By Zoila Palma: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries held its third training session on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for thrips in sweet pepper production on Thursday, August 27, at Springfield.
The session brought together 12 farmers for both theoretical and practical training aimed at strengthening their ability to identify and manage thrips during the crop cycle.
The theoretical session was facilitated by Agronomist Francisco Perez from Marketing Arm Guatemala, who focused on the proper use of insecticides to control thrips.
Farmers were taught that water quality plays an important role in the effectiveness of insecticide applications, particularly water pH and hardness. Participants were also shown how to conduct water pH and hardness tests and how to make adjustments when necessary.
The Ministry explained water used for insecticide applications should have a pH between 4.4 and 5.5 to help ensure the effectiveness of the products being applied. Farmers were given practical guidance on testing and adjusting water pH, providing them with tools to improve the efficiency of pest-control applications in their sweet pepper fields.
The practical session was led by Extension Officer Moises Perez, who demonstrated how to identify thrips on plants and highlighted the importance of placing blue sticky traps to attract and monitor the pest.
