By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprises (MAFSE) in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) recently organized a comprehensive training session aimed at enhancing coconut collective marketing strategies.

The event was held at the home of Tiburcio Acosta in San Estevan Village, Orange Walk District on February 8 and 9, 2024.

The training program, an integral component of the Advisory Services on With/Post COVID-19 Agricultural Value Chain Improvement in Belize (the JICA Project), commenced in February 2023 and has since made significant strides in bolstering the agricultural sector.

A total of 18 coconut farmers enthusiastically participated in the training, which featured a diverse agenda comprising conference presentations, interactive group activities, and enlightening field visits.

The first day commenced with an insightful presentation on coconut collective marketing delivered by Kenichi Machida, the esteemed team leader of the JICA Project.

Subsequently, participants engaged in dynamic group discussions to develop actionable plans tailored to enhance their collective marketing endeavors.

Moreover, Enrique Rivas, Project Officer at MAFSE, shared invaluable insights on foliar fertilizer applications, enriching participants with practical knowledge essential for optimizing coconut cultivation practices.

The second day of the training commenced with farmers presenting their visionary plans to introduce cutting-edge equipment, including a coconut shredder and a charcoal briquette machine, aimed at augmenting productivity and sustainability within the industry.

During immersive field visits, participants had the opportunity to explore two exemplary coconut farms, gaining firsthand insights into innovative farming techniques and witnessing the successful expansion of coconut cultivation areas. Notably, these endeavors were supported by generous donations of coconut seedlings provided by JICA in collaboration with MAFSE.

The culmination of the training featured a comprehensive lecture on farm bookkeeping and strategic marketing techniques tailored specifically for the coconut industry.
