By Zoila Palma: Today, a 10-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries and the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute, CARDI.
The MoU was signed by Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries Rodwell Ferguson and CARDI Country Representative in Belize, Omaira Avila Rostant at the Ministry’s National Show Grounds headquarters.
The agreement spans cooperation in research in various commodities, such as coconuts, that CARDI undertakes in Belize.

CARDI facilitates technology transfer and applies appropriate technologies to farmers and agribusinesses, while it also plays a key role in the region’s food security by leading in the “25% by 2025” CARICOM initiative, which aims to reduce the region’s food import bill by 25% by the year 2025.
CARDI is a regional body with headquarters in Trinidad and Tobago.
The main objectives of the Institute are to provide for the research and development needs of the agriculture of the Region as identified in national plans and policies; to provide an appropriate research and development service to the agricultural sector of Member States; to provide and extend the application of new technologies in production, processing, storage and distribution of agricultural products of Member States; to pursue for specified periods long-term research in pertinent areas; and to provide for the co-ordination and integration of the research and development efforts of its 14 Member States where this is possible and desirable.
CARDI is funded by member states who provide the core budget according to an agreed formula, while funding for projects came from donor agencies.
The present CARDI Executive Director is Ansari Hosein.
