By Zoila Palma: The Corozal Free Zone continues to play an important role in Belize’s economy, particularly for communities in the north, with approximately 3,000 people employed and 333 businesses currently operating in the area, according to Minister of Enterprise Henry Charles Usher.
Usher described the Free Zone as a major area of economic opportunity, emphasizing its contribution to employment and business activity. “The free zone is an important economic area for the country, especially for the north,” he said.
The minister said the government wants to see the Free Zone continue to grow by attracting additional investors and expanding the range of products and services offered there. “It is an area of economic opportunity. It is an important area for business, and we have to make sure that we continue to invest in the zone,” Usher said.
Usher also pointed to the potential for diversifying the Free Zone’s economic activities, including the introduction of light manufacturing. He said creating opportunities for investors to establish different types of businesses could further strengthen the zone and generate additional economic benefits for northern Belize.
