By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Minister of Home Affairs and Enterprise Oscar Mira has issued a forceful and deeply personal statement hitting back at Alberto August after August published a social media post that Mira says contained fabricated quotes deliberately attributed to him in connection with the tragic murder of Dr Naum Bonilla.
Mira was unsparing in his response.
“I have seen the social media post made by Mr. Alberto August. It is a shameful attempt to exploit the tragic murder of Dr. Naum Bonilla through the deliberate distortion of facts and the attribution of statements that I never made,” Mira stated.
The minister was categorical in his denial of the quotes attributed to him.
“Let me state unequivocally. I never said what Mr. August claims I said. Those words are entirely his invention.”
What makes the statement particularly striking is the personal connection Mira revealed between his family and the victim. Dr Naum Bonilla was not simply a name in a news story to the Mira family. He was a personal friend and classmate of Mira’s brother Keith Mira and someone the family knew as a young Belizean professional, a father, a friend and a member of their wider community.
“His death is not a political talking point to us. It is a personal tragedy,” Mira said.
The minister reserved some of his sharpest words for August’s conduct in placing fabricated statements inside quotation marks and presenting them as fact.
“For him to place fabricated words in quotation marks and present them as fact is an act of deception that speaks for itself,” Mira said.
He closed his statement with a direct and unambiguous warning to August.
“I always knew that Alberto August was disgusting but this is past disgusting. And you can be sure that any and all legal recourse available to me will be pursued to ensure that disgusting Alberto August pays for this attack on my name.”
