By Zoila Palma: On January 30, 2026, Orlando Habet , Minister of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management chaired the 123rd Special Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) – Environment and Sustainable Development.
The event brought CARICOM Ministers and regional partners together to advance key environmental priorities.
Attendees included CEO Milagro Matus, Anthony Mai (Department of the Environment), Edalmi Pinelo, Sumeet Betancourt (National Climate Change Office), and Saul Cruz (National Biodiversity Office), highlighting coordinated efforts to strengthen policy, resilience, and sustainable outcomes across key sectors.
Chaired at the Ministerial level, the meeting focused on critical issues including reflections from COP30 and preparation for COP31, outcomes of the Seventh Session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-7), progress on negotiations for an international legally binding treaty to end plastic pollution, and priority multilateral environmental events for 2026.
Ministers also discussed procedural matters and set the direction for upcoming COTED engagements, underscoring the importance of unity and coordinated regional action amid evolving global challenges.
The meeting reaffirmed CARICOM’s commitment to sustainable development, climate resilience, biodiversity protection, and strengthened environmental governance across the region.
