By Zoila Palma:  Minister of Infrastructure Development and Housing Julius Espat explained during his budget presentation on March 26, 2026, that the Government of Belize has completed the Corozal to Sarteneja Road Upgrading Project, a 42.3-kilometre initiative funded through a BZ$100 million loan from the Export-Import Bank of Taiwan.

The project, executed by Oversees Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd., included the construction of two new bridges at Pueblo Nuevo and Laguna Seca, replacing ferry crossings and improving connectivity in northern Belize.

Espat noted that an additional intervention is planned to address soil instability affecting a 200-metre stretch of roadway, where rapid settlement has been observed.

The upgrade forms part of the Ministry’s national effort to improve transport infrastructure, reduce travel costs, and enhance economic activity in rural communities.
