By Zoila Palma: Minister of Health and Wellness Kevin Bernard has pushed back against the Opposition’s response to Prime Minister John Briceño’s State of the Nation Address, calling it “heavy on rhetoric but light on facts.”

In a statement issued this week, Bernard highlighted the Briceno administration’s progress in health, economic recovery, and governance since taking office in 2020 and after winning re-election in 2025.

“Since 2020, and again since the people renewed our mandate in 2025, this Government has worked diligently to turn around a country facing a pandemic, economic contraction, and fragile public institutions. Today, Belize is recovering, stabilizing, and moving forward,” he said.

The minister rejected suggestions that Belize’s public health system is failing, pointing to upgrades and reforms across the sector.

“As Minister of Health and Wellness, I reject the suggestion that our public health system is ‘failing.’ The truth is clear,” Bernard said, citing new or renovated health facilities, workforce expansion, and reforms at the Central Medical Stores.

He also emphasized efforts to digitize healthcare services and expand campaigns on chronic diseases, noting that “Belizeans are living longer, and maternal and infant mortality have fallen steadily since 2021.”

Beyond health, Bernard defended the government’s wider record, stressing achievements in economic resilience, debt restructuring, housing, and security reform.

“We will not deny that challenges remain—cost of living, climate resilience, and youth employment among them. But our approach is solutions-driven, not sound-bite driven,” he said.

Minister Bernard also praised the Prime Minister’s national address, declaring: “Rhetoric cannot erase the progress Belizeans see and feel every day. Our administration stands ready to keep delivering: better health services, a stronger economy, safer communities, and accountable governance.”
