By Zoila Palma: During an interview with 7News Belize, Minister of Foreign Affairs Francis Fonseca said that Belize has been closely monitoring the situation in Venezuela along with CARICOM and SICA.

“So Belize has consistently said, listen, we are concerned about the military buildup in the Caribbean Sea. We want to ensure that the Caribbean remains a zone of peace. So obviously we are very, very concerned about the events that took place over the last few days. Where you had the US military and other operatives of the United States government going into Venezuela. And detaining and capturing both President Maduro and his wife and taking them back to the United States. We have engaged with Caricom and SICA to discuss our collective response to this matter. That is ongoing. But obviously Belize is very, very concerned,” Fonseca expressed.

In addition, Minister Fonseca says that Belize have a vested interest in global order that respects international law, that respects multilateralism, that respects the UN charter.

“We rely on those principles for very existence. So it’s very, very important for the small states like Belize to make it very clear that we reject any efforts, any attempts, any actions aimed at eroding those fundamental principles, of respect for international law, respect for sovereignty, respect for territorial integrity, you know, because those are the basis on which small states are able to grow and survive,” he added.

Minister Fonseca says that Belize rejects any efforts aimed at any country exercising domination over any region of the world, over any other country.
