By Zoila Palma: Belize’s sugar industry is expected to rebound in 2026 following setbacks linked to disease and declining global prices, Minister of Agriculture Rodwell Ferguson said during his budget presentation today.
Ferguson reported that export revenues fell sharply last year.
“Export revenues from sugar fell by $68.6 million, from $182.25 million in 2024 to $113.65 million in 2025,” he said.
However, coordinated intervention has improved prospects for recovery.
“We tackled the Fusarium problem quickly, and together we implemented an innovative program using fungicides, biologicals and root stimulants,” Ferguson explained.
He added that conditions are improving for the upcoming crop.
“2026 will see a significant rebound, both in terms of sugarcane deliveries to the factory and the quality of cane produced,” Ferguson said.
