Minister of Agriculture participates in Food and Agriculture Organization’s 39th Regional Conference in Brazil

By Zoila Palma:  Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries Rodwell Ferguson is attending the 39th Session of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean (LARC39).

The event is being held in Brasília, Brazil, from March 2 to 6.

The conference’s central objective is to define FAO’s work priorities for the next two years across Latin America and the Caribbean.

The conference opened on March 2 with the Senior Officers Meeting (SOM), a technical session bringing together Member State delegations to examine strategic challenges and outline key regional orientations.

Among the main issues under discussion are food price inflation and its impact on food security and nutrition, including policies adopted by countries to safeguard access to healthy diets and advance Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger. Delegates are also addressing the One Health approach, strengthening governance, surveillance and biosecurity to respond to threats affecting animal, plant and human health.

Discussions are further focusing on the sustainable management of water and soils as essential resources for food security, particularly in the face of climate change, unsustainable practices and policy gaps.

FAO is presenting results achieved in the region during the 2024–2025 biennium, highlighting progress in sustainability, agricultural innovation, healthy diets, climate resilience, rural development and partnerships that support the Sustainable Development Goals. Strategies to boost the resilience of agrifood systems amid increasing climate variability are also being examined.

The ministerial segment runs from March 4 to 6 and will be inaugurated by high-level authorities of the Federative Republic of Brazil and FAO Director-General QU Dongyu.

High-level sessions and ministerial roundtables will facilitate exchanges on eradicating hunger and poverty, reducing inequalities and expanding financing and investment in agriculture and food systems.

The outcomes will guide FAO’s regional priorities under four key areas—better production, better nutrition, better environment and better life—shaping the Organization’s work with Member States for the next biennium.
