By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Minister of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise, Jose Abelardo Mai, visited New World Screwworm treatment centers and inspection points in Choluteca, Honduras, on Wednesday morning to observe how the Honduran Ministry of Agriculture is implementing its plan to contain and eradicate the devastating pest.
“They are reviewing what has happened, the lessons learned, best practices, and gaining a global overview of the situation,” the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) said in a statement on Wednesday.
Minister Mai told Breaking Belize News that he and his team were at an inspection point set up by the Honduran National Service of Agricultural Health and Food Safety (Senasa) in Corrales Azules in Choluteca, near the border with Nicaragua, where 14 of the 20 cases had been detected. He said three of the cases were detected in horses and 11 in cattle. He was informed that the animals were likely imported from Nicaragua.
On Tuesday evening, he visited another inspection point in Choluteca, where he saw cattle being transported in trucks.
“Yesterday’s visit to an inspection point in Choluteca, Honduras, underscored the need for vigilance and monitoring of cattle movements to ensure maximum containment of the screwworm,” MAFSE said.
Panama, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua reported cases before Honduras, where the first cases were identified in September.
The visit, which will also take him to Panama, is part of regional collaboration efforts to combat the devastating disease, which could have disastrous effects on the livestock industry.
Minister Mai is accompanied by MAFSE Chief Executive Officer Servulo Baeza, Adviser Hugh O’Brien, and International Regional Organization for Plant and Animal Health (OIRSA) Country Representative Fermin Blanco.
The Ministry of Agriculture has been very vigilant and has stepped up its measures to keep Belize free of the New World Screwworm.
