By Zoila Palma: Agriculture Minister Rodwell Ferguson has identified climate-smart infrastructure, agro-processing, regional transportation and business partnerships as key investment opportunities for strengthening Caribbean food systems.
Ferguson told BBN that private investment will be essential as countries work toward the longer-term objectives of Vision 25 by 2025+5.
One area identified by Ferguson is regional transportation. “A regional cost-effective ferry to facilitate trade particularly within the island territories,” he said.
He said improved maritime links could help reduce transportation costs and make it easier for agricultural products to reach markets across the Caribbean.
Ferguson also highlighted the need for investment in agricultural infrastructure.
“Climate-smart infrastructure to improve production and storage, reduce post-harvest losses and stabilize production and export quality,” Minister Ferguson added.
In addition, he pointed to agro-processing and regional business partnerships as opportunities for investors. “Value adding as in the previous cases shared by Belize,” he explained highlighting Belize’s investments in soybean, sugar and other processing industries.
