By Zoila Palma: Belize’s agricultural sector is seeing a wave of new investments aimed at strengthening agro-processing and reducing reliance on raw exports, according to Minister of Agriculture, Jose Abelardo Mai.
Speaking during the 2025 Budget Debate, Minister Mai announced that two new meat processing facilities are currently under construction in northern Belize — part of a broader strategy to add value to the livestock industry.
“There are new investments in meat processing. Two meat processing facilities are going up in the north so that someday, we don’t depend only on exporting cattle on the hoof,” Mai said. “This is about adding value to our livestock industry.”
Beyond livestock, the minister detailed a wide range of processing investments now underway across the sector.
These include facilities for poultry, dairy products, soybean meal, refined soybean oil, coconut water, coconut oil, pasta products, corn chips, corn flour, dog food, wheat flour, fine chocolate manufacturing, confectionery coconut, hemp, and oil products.
