Minister of Agriculture calls for ‘One country, one product’ model to strengthen Caribbean Food Security

By Zoila Palma: Agriculture Minister Rodwell Ferguson is proposing a “One Country, One Product” approach as the Caribbean looks toward 2030 and seeks to strengthen regional food security.

Ferguson told BBN that countries could specialize in commodities where they have strong production advantages while increasing trade among regional markets.

Ferguson said the approach could help countries coordinate production and reduce duplication. “Design a ONE COUNTRY/ONE PRODUCT model and put in place mechanisms to enable success and then launch it,” Minister Ferguson said.

He gave examples of how such specialization could work across the region. “For eg. Guyana will be the rice bread basket of the Caribbean, Belize and Jamaica will be the beef bread basket of the Caribbean, St. Vincent and Dominica will be the root crops bread baskets of the Caribbean, etc.,” he explained.

Ferguson said the model would need to be accompanied by investments in infrastructure and regional trade.
