By Zoila Palma: The PUP Northern caucus has issued a statement publicly endorsing BTL’s proposed acquisition of Smart.
The National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) is staging a protest on Wednesday in Belize City.
Independent senators and media representatives have also publicly opposed the proposed acquisition.
But, the PUP’s Northern caucus statement was the first public endorsement.
Minister of Infrastructure Development and Housing Julius Espat told 7News Belize that he was disappointed by the statement.
“I was surprised of that release that came out. I saw it this morning. Why? Because in cabinet it was decided that there would be no political interference. So I am not in agreement with that and if the western caucus decided it will be with Cayo South not there because we made an agreement that the political interference would not be a part of the decision making and that I am totally disappointed with,” Espat said.
Espat stressed that cabinet was reluctant in taking a position because they were waiting for consultations to occur.
