Minister Rodwell Ferguson

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Minister of Agriculture, Food Security, Enterprise and New Growth Industries, Rodwell Ferguson, delivered a comprehensive address at the 46th Belize Livestock Producers’ Association (BLPA) Annual General Meeting, held at the BLPA Headquarters at Mile 47.5 on the George Price Highway, emphasizing the sector’s resilience, economic importance, and the need for continued innovation and unity as Belize’s livestock industry advances.

The AGM, held under the theme “Building A New Legacy: Empowering Livestock Farmers, Building Markets and Securing a Sustainable Future Economy,” brought together a strong national turnout of cattle farmers, government officials, development partners, and industry stakeholders. Minister Ferguson acknowledged the presence of Minister of State Alex Balona, Orange Walk South Area Representative Jose Mai, BLPA Chairman Arden Edwards and the Board of Directors, representatives of BAHA and OIRSA, the banking sector, project partners, and BLPA CEO William Usher and staff.

A Vision for a Stronger Industry

The Minister noted that the AGM theme captured the strength and ambition of the livestock sector.

“Today is a moment to reflect on our journey, celebrate our achievements, and chart a bold course forward — toward a cattle industry that is productive, competitive, sustainable, regenerative, and resilient,” Minister Ferguson said.

Industry Growth and Economic Contribution

Despite challenges such as fluctuating prices, rising input costs, climate pressures, and a second outbreak of the New World Screwworm, the Minister reported that the cattle industry continued to grow in 2025. Belize now has 7,951 active farmed animal producers, with women representing 11% of the sector. The national herd stands at 206,079 beef cattle, up from 205,508 in 2024, and BLPA membership increased by more than 1,200 new farmers in one year.

Orange Walk remains the leading cattle‑producing district with 102,813 head, followed by Cayo with 59,392 head, together accounting for nearly 79% of the national herd.

Exports and Revenue Strengthen the Sector

Exports remained strong in 2025, with 41,630 cattle shipped to regional markets—33,333 to Guatemala and 8,297 to Mexico—generating an estimated BZ $80 million, surpassing the BZ $77 million earned in 2024. Minister Ferguson commended BLPA, exporters, farmers, and partner agencies for maintaining high‑quality supply to both domestic and international markets.

He also highlighted the need for better production data to support policy decisions.

“I strongly encourage improved data collection — including informal slaughter activities — so that we can accurately assess production trends and make sound policy decisions for sustainable growth,” Ferguson said.

Improved Prices and Stronger Partnerships

The Minister noted that cattle prices have doubled over the past five to six years, rising from BZ $1.50 per pound to BZ $3.20–$3.40 per pound, and credited this improvement to strengthened public‑private collaboration. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to improving genetics, strengthening the national breeding program, and ensuring that small farmers have access to high‑quality pedigree cattle.

A Call for Value Addition and Sustainable Growth

Minister Ferguson emphasized that the next phase of development must focus on value addition, innovation, and climate‑resilient production systems. He outlined priorities such as improved animal health status, advances in nutritional science, manufacturing and processing, traceability systems, and regenerative practices.

He also reiterated the Government’s commitment under Plan Belize to support local production and reduce the import bill.

“Let us produce more, let us consume local and let us import less,” Minister Ferguson said.

Unity and Commitment for the Future

Closing his address, the Minister urged producers to remain united and forward‑looking as the industry continues to evolve.

“Livestock is more than an industry — it is a way of life, a heritage, and a responsibility. Together, we must ensure that this legacy thrives for generations to come,” Minister Ferguson said.

He expressed confidence that the 46th AGM would inspire continued collaboration and progress toward a stronger, more sustainable livestock sector for Belize.
