By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belizeans earning minimum wage can expect another increase, with Prime Minister John Briceño announcing that the rate is expected to rise from $5 to $6 per hour in the near future.

Briceño made the announcement during his 2026 State of the Nation Address while outlining measures his administration says are aimed at easing cost of living pressures.

The increase would represent a 20 percent adjustment to the current $5 hourly minimum wage.

According to the Prime Minister, almost 50,000 wage earners benefited when the minimum wage was previously increased to $5 per hour.

Briceño did not provide a specific implementation date for the new $6 rate in the address.

The Prime Minister acknowledged that Belizean households continue to struggle with higher prices, although he argued that much of the inflation affecting the country is imported.

He said Government will continue looking for ways to reduce the financial burden on families.

Other measures highlighted included GST relief, transportation subsidies and salary adjustments for public officers.

The proposed $6 minimum wage would mean a worker putting in a standard 40 hour week could earn $240 before deductions, compared to $200 at the current minimum rate.
