By Breaking Belize News Staff: Mikael Sosa, 39, an accountant of Hattieville, has been granted bail in the sum of $10,000 with two sureties of $5,000 each, following lengthy arguments before the High Court regarding a domestic dispute in which he is accused of assaulting his wife while allegedly armed with a Sig Sauer brand M17 CO2 powered semi-automatic air pistol.

Earlier this month, on February 16, 2026, Sosa was denied bail and remanded to the Belize Central Prison by Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison, who cited concerns over the proximity of the accused to his wife amid increasing cases of domestic violence in Belize. The Senior Magistrate had indicated that bail was a matter for a court of superior jurisdiction.

Sosa, who is represented by Attorney Orson “OJ” Elrington, appeared before Justice Derick Sylvester on Thursday, February 26, 2026. After hearing submissions from both the defense and the Crown, Justice Sylvester granted bail under strict and nearly a dozen conditions.

As part of his bail conditions, Sosa must remove himself from the matrimonial home and reside with his father in Cayo. He is required to report to the San Ignacio Police Station every Wednesday, observe a curfew from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., and attend all scheduled adjournments before the Belize City Magistrate’s Court. He is also prohibited from contacting the virtual complainant or any witnesses in the matter, must enroll in anger management counseling, and cannot leave the country without the permission of a judge.

Additionally, Sosa is allowed a single police-escorted visit to the matrimonial home to retrieve his personal belongings. He must surrender all travel documents to the court, and a copy of the bail order is to be served on the virtual complainant and the Officer Commanding the San Ignacio Police Station.

The charges against Sosa stem from an incident in Hattieville in which his wife reported that she discovered a locked chat on his laptop allegedly involving another woman. According to her report, an argument ensued after she confronted him. The dispute reportedly escalated into a struggle over the laptop, during which Sosa allegedly punched her in the face.

His wife further alleged that he threatened to kill her after pulling out the air pistol and placing it against her face, leaving her fearful for her life.

A medico-legal form completed by a doctor who examined the complainant documented visible injuries, including a bruise under her left breast, a swollen pinky finger, bite marks on her right shoulder area, and bruising to her left cheek.

Sosa has been charged with one count of harm and one count of aggravated assault with a dangerous instrument. He has pleaded not guilty to both charges.

He is due back in court on April 17, 2026.
