By Aaron Humes: In a surprise move, Michael Peyrefitte has written to the Acting Chairman of the United Democratic Party (UDP), requesting to rescind his resignation letter and potentially reclaim his position as Chairman. Peyrefitte stepped down from the executive shortly after the general elections in March.
This development comes amid ongoing tensions between Moses “Shyne” Barrow and Tracy Panton, with a senior UDP veteran intervening to unite the party. Certain members of Panton’s Alliance for Democracy are expected to participate in an upcoming National Party Council (NPC) meeting, scheduled for early July, to bring both sides together. A Leadership Convention is tentatively set for early October.
In his letter, Peyrefitte stated, “Please be informed that I hereby withdraw that resignation; for me to be Chairman again [for] me to help with the process of our Party becoming what we know it can be.” However, it’s unclear whether the rescission will be accepted. Since Peyrefitte’s resignation, Alberto August has been acting as the UDP Chairman.
The UDP’s central executive committee has been at odds with Panton, Faber, Beverly Williams, and John Saldivar, who view their removal from the executive as illegitimate. The acceptance of Peyrefitte’s request and its implications for the party’s future remain to be seen.
