By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Mexico and the United States have signed a protocol to resume the exportation of live cattle from Mexico to the United States, Mexico’s Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development reported on Thursday. This agreement marks a pivotal step in strengthening trade relations and ensuring the health and safety of livestock.

The protocol was signed by representatives from the Mexican Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). This agreement outlines the measures necessary to restart the exportation of Mexican cattle, which had been suspended following the detection of a cattle screwworm (GBG) case in an animal from Central America, discovered on November 21 in Catazajá, Chiapas.

Under the new protocol, personnel from Mexico’s National Service for Agro-Alimentary Health, Safety, and Quality (Senasica) and the USDA will jointly inspect the cattle intended for export to the United States. These inspections aim to certify that the cattle comply with the sanitary conditions stipulated in the agreement, ensuring the health and safety of livestock and consumers alike.

This collaborative effort demonstrates the commitment of both nations to maintaining high standards of animal health and food safety, while also supporting the agricultural economies of Mexico and the United States. The renewed exportation agreement is expected to have a positive impact on the livestock industry and trade relations between the two countries.

Belize also exports cattle to Mexico. Recently, Mexico’s newly appointed Secretary of Agriculture, Dr. Julio Berdegué Sacristán, stated that Mexico will import cattle from Belize even if the New World Screwworm is found in Belize, as protocols will be in place to ensure safety. During a meeting with Belize’s Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, Jose Abelardo Mai, Dr. Berdegué emphasized Mexico’s interest in importing every head of cattle that is legally exported from Belize and complies with the technical protocols to ensure sanitized standards. “Everything that you can send us, we will receive it very gladly,” he added.
