By Horace Palacio: Central America marked its annual Independence Day celebrations today, September 15, 2024, with Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica commemorating their shared liberation from Spain in 1821. Mexico, located in North America, also gained independence from Spain in 1821 and will hold its observance tomorrow, September 16, with a traditional ceremony set to take place tonight. Belize, which gained independence from Britain in 1981, will follow with its national celebration on September 21.
The call for Mexico’s independence was delivered by revolutionary leader Miguel Hidalgo on September 16, 1810, in the town of Dolores, Guanajuato. This event is widely regarded as the moment that initiated Mexico’s war for independence. Hidalgo’s passionate plea for rebellion sparked a decade-long struggle, which concluded with Mexico’s independence on September 28, 1821. Though Hidalgo was captured and executed in 1811, his call for liberty remains a symbol of the nation’s fight for freedom.
Tonight, the Mexican president will reenact the historic call for independence in a nationally broadcast ceremony, a tradition that continues to unite the country in celebration of its hard-won sovereignty.
In Central America, celebrations today highlight the region’s historical bonds and shared struggle for freedom. While Panama did not gain independence from Spain in 1821, instead securing its freedom from Colombia in 1903, the rest of the Central American republics reflect on more than two centuries of autonomy, with festivities that emphasize the enduring values of liberty and national pride across the region. Belize, the youngest of the group, will celebrate its 43rd Independence Day on September 21.
