By Zoila Palma: Several countries in Central America are celebrating Independence Day on September 15, with Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica marking their liberation from Spain in 1821.
Belize, the youngest nation in the region, will celebrate its own independence from Britain on September 21.
Mexico, which also broke from Spanish rule in 1821, observes its national day tomorrow, September 16.
Tonight, the Mexican president will reenact Miguel Hidalgo’s historic 1810 “Grito de Dolores,” the call that sparked Mexico’s decade-long fight for freedom.
Festivities across the region highlight shared history and pride in sovereignty, with Belize preparing to mark its 44th Independence Day on September 21, 2025.
