By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: During an interview on 7News Belize, Prime Minister John Briceno announced Cabinet’s decision to waive fees and provide free entry cards to Mexican visitors, streamlining the process of crossing into Belize.

This includes the removal of border taxes and the option for Mexicans to utilize their insurance coverage while in Belize.

The aim of these measures is to encourage and facilitate increased tourism from Mexico to Belize.

Additionally, discussions have ensued regarding the integration of the Tren Maya project into Belize’s transportation network.

Prime Minister Briceno disclosed conversations with General Aguila and ICA, a private sector company overseeing sections of the project, about the possibility of extending Tren Maya from Chetumal, Mexico, to the Belize border and beyond.

The Prime Minister noted that plans are underway to formalize these agreements in the near future.

Addressing concerns about the $95 fee per person levied on Belizeans arriving by boat in Chetumal, Prime Minister Briceno expressed intentions to negotiate its waiver in future dialogues with the Governor of Quintana Roo, underscoring efforts to foster smoother cross-border relations between Belize and Mexico.
