By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belizean-American man from Placencia who has been on remand for months pending a psychiatric evaluation has been granted bail, but remains in custody after being unable to meet the conditions.
Brandon Rogers, who is charged with an indictable offense, appeared this week before Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison in Court #6. Due to concerns about his mental state, Rogers has not been formally arraigned and has been awaiting a psychiatric evaluation while detained at the Belize Central Prison.
During his court appearance, Rogers was offered bail in the sum of $4,000 plus one surety of the same amount.
However, Rogers indicated to the court that he may be unable to secure bail, explaining that he has limited contact with relatives. He stated that his only known family connection is an aunt whom he can reach via Facebook, and that his only other contact while on remand has been with the U.S. Embassy.
As a result, Rogers was unable to post bail and was remanded back to prison.
Rogers told the court that he returned to Belize approximately three to four years ago after spending nearly a decade in the United States. He added that he attended school in both Belize and the U.S., and graduated from Independence High School at age 20.
His case remains pending, with no psychiatric evaluation conducted to date.
