By Breaking Belize News Staff: David Friesen, a 29-year-old Mennonite national, was formally indicted for murder last week at the High Court of Belize, accused in the 2024 killing of Alexander Villamill in Corozalito Village.
Friesen appeared before Justice Nigel Pilgrim, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge. The court set his next appearance for June 6, 2025, for a Case Management Conference (CMC). He was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until that date.
Friesen is alleged to have committed the murder on February 17, 2024. While few details of the case were disclosed in court, his attorney, Dr. Lynden Jones, told the judge he plans to challenge the admissibility of a statement reportedly made by Friesen to police.
According to Jones, the defense will seek a voir dire—a trial within a trial—to argue that the statement was coerced and later tampered with after Friesen signed it.
Friesen, who will turn 30 on May 26, remains in custody as the case proceeds.
