By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Briceño has completed his previously canceled visit to the Vatican to meet with Pope Francis and deputy secretary of state in the Vatican Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, a visit he described to reporters today as “one of the highlights of my life” as a practicing Roman Catholic. As the P.M. noted, even his highly religious late mother would have been excited at his rare opportunity.

The P.M. and the former Argentine cardinal elected Bishop of Rome discussed Belize and his family. The P.M. said their allotted one hour together went over time as the discussion ran long. He concluded by asking the Pope to pray for Belize, as the Diocese of Belize City-Belmopan has been without a spiritual leader since the passing of Bishop Larry Nicasio on New Year’s Day.

The Pope now has an original painting from Pen Cayetano hanging somewhere in the Palace as well as a standing invitation to visit Belize, which only the late John Paul II did for approximately six hours out of his predecessors.

The delegation included his wife, Rosanna Briceño, the Special Envoy for Women and Children, Amalia Mai, the Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Cabinet Secretary Stuart Leslie.
