By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 45-year-old mechanic has been fined after pleading guilty to possession of crack cocaine in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court.
Wayne Wallace, a resident of Marigold Lane, appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2, where he was read a single charge of possession of controlled drugs for 0.6 grams of crack cocaine.
Wallace pleaded guilty at the first opportunity and was treated as a first-time offender. The court imposed a non-custodial sentence, fining him $505, which includes court costs. He has until July 1, 2026, to pay the fine, in default of which he will serve three months’ imprisonment.
In handing down the sentence, the Senior Magistrate noted that while the quantity of the drug was less than one gram, the nature of the substance—crack cocaine—was a serious aggravating factor. However, the court also considered mitigating factors, including Wallace’s early guilty plea, his remorse, and the indication that the drug was for personal use and not intended for sale. These considerations earned him a one-third reduction from the initial starting point of $1,000.
Prior to the ruling, Wallace was required to settle outstanding fines totaling $160, which he was able to pay.
According to police, the incident occurred on Monday, April 20, 2026, at around 4:50 p.m. Officers on patrol along Marigold Lane became suspicious after observing Wallace leaving the residence of a known drug dealer and behaving suspiciously while riding a bicycle. A search was conducted, during which two small white rocky substances, suspected to be crack cocaine, were discovered inside an empty cigarette pack in his pants pocket.
Wallace was subsequently arrested and charged, leading to his conviction.
