Meat and poultry prices rise, SIB data shows

By Zoila Palma:  Belizean consumers paid significantly more for meat and poultry products in May 2026 compared to the same period last year, according to data released by the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).

The figures, which compare average prices in May 2025 and May 2026, show increases across every major meat category.

Ground beef recorded the largest increase among commonly consumed meat products, rising by 11.1 percent over the one-year period. The average price climbed from $7.44 per pound in May 2025 to $8.26 per pound in May 2026.

Whole fish also saw a substantial increase of 10.1 percent, with prices moving from $9.18 to $10.11 per pound. Turkey prices rose by 8.1 percent, while stew pork increased by 7.5 percent.

Among poultry products, chicken wings experienced one of the highest increases, rising 4.3 percent from $6.86 to $7.16 per pound. Chicken legs went up by 4.5 percent, while whole chicken increased by 3.3 percent and chicken cuts by 3.1 percent. Chicken breast recorded the smallest increase among poultry products, rising by 0.8 percent from $4.84 to $4.88 per pound.

Beef steak prices also trended upward, increasing by 4.7 percent from $10.39 to $10.87 per pound.

 The latest figures come as the SIB reported a national inflation rate of 4.3 percent for May 2026, with food prices rising by 3 percent overall.
