Press Release
The Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) inform the public that up to Saturday, May 3rd, Belize had 70 (seventy) cumulative cases of New World Screwworm (NWS).
The public is informed that the Toledo, Stann Creek, Cayo, and a portion of the Belize District up to Sandhill Village, extending east to the Caribbean Sea, and west to the border with the Orange Walk District, are considered NWS-infested.
Within the infested area, the 90-day quarantine of facilities is no longer enforced; however, the requirements for New World Screwworm Health Inspection Certificates and Movement Permits remain in place.
In addition, for movement from the infested area into the non-infested areas of Corozal, Orange Walk, and that portion of the Belize District north of Sandhill, animals shall be treated with Ivermectin by the owner during inspection and before NWS Health Inspection Certificates and Movement Permits are issued. Horses may be treated with Doramectin.
Within the non-infested areas, NWS Health Inspection Certificates and Movement Permits are still required.
Except for the above-stated, all other protocols and procedures remain unchanged.
As the number of cases in pets and backyard animals rises, owners are reminded to regularly inspect and treat all wounds on their dogs, cats and other animals.
The public is reminded that key preventative measures include consistent inspection of animals, curing of wounds with approved larvicides, early notification, and controlled movement of animals.
Also, remember to:
- Immediately report all cases of myiasis (infestation of wounds by larvae) to the nearest BAHA office, MAFSE office, or healthcare provider.
- Declare all animals (including pets) upon arrival at an Animal Movement Control Point. These are in Sandhill, Bullet Tree Falls, and Jalacte.
- Ensure the movement of all small stock and livestock during daylight hours.
- Import animals only with the approval and authorization of BAHA, and
- Do not import animals through a non-established point of entry.
The public is reminded that: Any person who contravenes the Belize Agricultural Health Authority Statutory Instrument 143 of 2024: New World Screwworm Prevention, Control, and Eradication Regulations commits an offense and is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding five thousand dollars or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years, or to both such fine and terms of imprisonment.
Cases of suspected larval infestations in animals can be reported to the BAHA Animal Health Department at 302-1388 in Orange Walk, 824-4872 in Central Farm, or by WhatsApp at 670-7003.
For further information, email the Animal Health Department at animalhealth@baha.org.bz or call 824-4872.
