By Zoila Palma: Mayor of San Ignacio and Santa Elena Earl Trapp is raising concerns about what he described as serious electoral irregularities in Polling Area 73 following a review of the 2024 Municipal Elections and the 2025 General Elections.
Speaking during a UDP press conference on May 19, Trapp questioned the sharp increase in votes recorded.
According to Trapp, Polling Area 73 recorded an increase of more than 1,056 additional votes between the municipal and general elections held one year apart.
“After reviewing the 2024 Municipal Elections and the 2025 General Elections, I believe there are serious electoral irregularities within Polling Area 73,” Trapp said. “This is not about political frustration. This is about whether Belizeans can continue to trust the integrity of elections.”
Trapp explained that during the 2024 municipal election, he defeated the PUP candidate in all three polling areas that make up the twin towns — 72, 73, and 76.
However, he noted that the following year Polling Area 73 experienced a dramatic increase in voter turnout that far exceeded the increases seen in the other divisions. “Polling Area 72 increased by 15%. Polling Area 76 increased by 9%. Polling Area 73 increased by a little over 60, 65% which is more than 1,000 additional votes in just one year,” he stated.
Trapp further alleged that the overwhelming majority of the new votes appeared to favor the PUP.
“The PUP gained virtually the entire increase, approximately 1,056 additional votes. In other words, more than 99% of all new votes in Polling Area 73 went to one political party,” he said.
