By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Maya Island Air has begun serving Punta Gorda following Tropic Air’s decision to withdraw from the route, ensuring that residents of Toledo continue to have access to domestic air transportation.
Toledo East Area Representative Osmond Martinez confirmed on Sunday, November 1, that the first Maya Island Air flight landed successfully in Punta Gorda without any reported problems.
“We are happy to report that the air transport to Punta Gorda is not being disrupted,” Martinez announced.
The development follows Tropic Air’s withdrawal from Punta Gorda operations, which raised concerns about the future of air connectivity for Belize’s southernmost district.
With Tropic Air no longer serving the destination, Maya Island Air’s decision to operate flights provides an important alternative for residents, businesses and travellers.
Martinez thanked Maya Island Air for its commitment to Toledo, saying the company had demonstrated confidence in the district by maintaining air connectivity.
He also acknowledged Prime Minister John Briceño, Cabinet, the Belize Airports Authority and CEO Narda Garcia for their involvement in addressing residents’ concerns.
Air transportation remains an important service for Punta Gorda, particularly for travellers seeking connections to other parts of Belize without relying entirely on lengthy road journeys.
Martinez reassured residents that flights were continuing normally and emphasized the importance of cooperation between government and the private sector in improving services for Toledo.
