Maud Williams boys crowned NSSSA basketball champions

Central champions Maud Williams High School captured the National Secondary Schools Sports Association Boys Basketball Championship this past weekend, outclassing Western champions Sacred Heart College Hawks 59–41 in Saturday’s final at the Orange Walk Multipurpose Complex.
Russel Bailey, the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, spearheaded the Belize City school’s attack with 19 points. Teammates Marlon McClaren and Tristenn Brown chipped in 11 apiece, while last year’s MVP Jason Orosco added 8 points. Deon Bennett and Trevaunte Brown rounded out the scoring with 5 and 4 points respectively. Jeremy Carbajal was the Hawks’ point man with 14 points while Jaden Morris added 11.

The Hawks had earned their place in the final by edging the Southern champions, Independence High Invaders, 58–54 in Friday’s opening semifinal. Morris struck four treys for 20 points, while Carbajal added 19 to secure the win. The Invaders’ Denbert Lopez led his side with 19 points in a valiant effort.
Later that night, Maud Williams booked their ticket to the final by defeating Northern champions Muffles College Bobcats, 69–61, thanks to Orosco’s 28-point explosion. MVP Bailey nailed 15 points as well. Deon bennet added 13. Julian Gomez and Oshane Munnings posted 20 points apiece for the Orange Walk side.

The Bobcats rebounded in Saturday’s third-place playoff, edging Independence 63–62 behind Julian Gomez’s 29 points. Munnings accounted for 21. Ziyad Flores scored 15 points for Independence. Dean Augustine added 13.
The NSSSA executive committee presented trophies and medals to the top three teams, with President Francis Pascual awarding Bailey the MVP honour.
