By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Guatemalan authorities have launched a massive manhunt after 20 leaders of the Barrio 18 gang escaped from the Fraijanes II Maximum Security Prison on October 11, 2025. The Centro Antipandillas Transnacional (CAT) confirmed that the fugitives are considered high-ranking members of one of Central America’s most violent criminal networks
The escape took place at the Fraijanes II facility in Guatemala City’s metropolitan area, a prison designed to hold the country’s most dangerous inmates. The gang leaders, many identified by their street names such as “Chucho,” “Cartoon,” “Happy,” and “Wicked,” are part of various sub-groups within the Barrio 18 organization
The Guatemalan National Civil Police, in collaboration with the FBI and Interpol, is coordinating efforts to locate the escapees. Security forces have been deployed across the country’s borders amid fears that the fugitives could attempt to flee into neighboring nations, including Belize, Honduras, or El Salvador.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements, as several of the escapees are known to have connections with transnational criminal networks involved in extortion, murder, and drug trafficking.
