By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police are investigating a brazen aggravated burglary that left an elderly American couple injured and robbed of thousands of dollars in cash and valuables on Monday night.
Reports indicate that at approximately 8:55 p.m. on March 30, 2026, police responded to information of an aggravated burglary in progress at a residence located just off the highway near the Haulover Bridge heading toward Ladyville Village.
Upon arrival, officers spoke with a 73-year-old American retiree and his wife, who reported that around 8:35 p.m., they were inside their home watching television when three masked men entered through the back door. One of the intruders was reportedly armed with a firearm.
The assailants demanded that the husband take them to a safe inside the residence. He complied and led one of the men upstairs, where he opened the safe. The thieves made off with $5,000 USD in cash, a Rolex watch valued at $10,000 USD, two sets of vehicle keys, two sets of property keys, an iPhone 16 valued at $1,100 USD, and assorted jewelry.
The ordeal was interrupted when one of the stolen vehicle keys triggered an alarm, causing the suspects to flee through the back door of the home.
The couple sustained minor facial injuries during the incident and were issued medico-legal forms.
Police processed and photographed the scene, and investigations are ongoing. Authorities noted that surveillance footage from the residence has not yet been reviewed. The stolen iPhone 16 has since been recovered on the Belize City side of the Haulover Bridge.
