Masked gunman kills man in Consejo Village ambush

By Horace Palacio: Corozal Police are investigating the murder of a 29-year-old man in Consejo Village. On Thursday, April 25th, 2024, at approximately 5:18 pm, police responded to reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered the body of Johnny Arana, a Belizean cane farmer, behind a purple cement house.

Arana was found lying face down, dressed in a white short cargo pants and a faded blue T-shirt. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Arana’s sister later identified him at the scene.

Initial investigations indicate that Arana was spraying herbicides in an open lot beside his yard around 5:10 pm when an assailant emerged from nearby bushes and fired several shots. The attacker is described as approximately 5 feet 11 inches in height, with a slim build. He was dressed in black clothing with a hoodie and mask obscuring his face. The assailant fled the scene after the shooting.

Crime scene technicians processed the scene and retrieved several 7.62 expended casings. Police are reviewing video surveillance footage in hopes of identifying the suspect. Arana’s body was transported to the Corozal Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:25 pm. His body awaits a post-mortem examination.

The motive for the murder remains unknown, and the investigation is ongoing.
