By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 28-year-old Belize City businessman was remanded to the Belize Central Prison on Tuesday after being charged in connection with an alleged shooting involving two teenage boys and the subsequent discovery of a loaded revolver in a drain.
Mark Anthony Ryan Swift, of LaCroix Boulevard, appeared unrepresented before the Chief Magistrate in Court #1, where he pleaded not guilty to keeping an unlicensed firearm, keeping ammunition without a gun licence and aggravated assault.
Due to the nature of the firearm charges, Swift was denied bail and remanded until November 13, 2026.
The charges stem from an incident shortly before 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 19, when police on mobile patrol reportedly encountered two boys, ages 15 and 16, running along Police Street.
According to police, the teenagers told officers that a man they identified as Swift had just fired a shot at them with a revolver. The boys accompanied police back toward LaCroix Boulevard and allegedly pointed out Swift near the corner of Police and Rootsville streets.
Police allege that when Swift was detained, he told officers that the teenagers had been harassing him and offered to show police where he had thrown the gun.
Officers subsequently searched a dried drain in the area and reportedly recovered a rusty revolver bearing the serial number “5823.” Police say the weapon contained six rounds in its chamber — five live .38 rounds and one spent casing.
The teenagers later gave statements in the presence of a Justice of the Peace.
According to their account, the 16-year-old had gone outside a Police Street residence to lock a gate when he encountered Swift allegedly armed with a .38 revolver. The 15-year-old subsequently came outside looking for his friend and allegedly heard Swift threaten to kill the 16-year-old.
The boys said they ran and that Swift pursued them before allegedly firing a shot in their direction. Neither teenager was reported injured.
Police detained Swift and later charged him with aggravated assault, keeping an unlicensed firearm and keeping ammunition without a gun licence.
The allegations against Swift have not been proven in court.
