Legacy and Lineage of Marcus Moziah Garvey draws on rare archival records to explore the Jamaican icon’s lineage, relationships and enduring legacy. Vic Motune (The Voice Online) writes, “A new book tracing the family history, relationships and global journeys of Marcus Garvey has been published by cultural and ancestral genealogist Selena Carty following years of archival research across Jamaica, Britain, the United States, and Canada.” [The limited edition features The First Supper (Galaxy Black), a 2023 work by Bahamian artist Tavares Strachan.]

Legacy & Lineage of Marcus Moziah Garvey brings together genealogical, family, legal and historical records relating to Jamaica’s first National Hero, alongside the stories of Amy “Ashwood” Garvey and Amy “Jacques” Garvey, two women central to his life and legacy.

The 412-page, full-colour hardback includes family trees, letters, writings and records documenting the lives and movements of all three figures, including marriage certificates from Jamaica, birth records relating to their siblings and birth, marriage and death certificates.

Carty, founder of BlackPoppyRose and BlackRose of Remembrance, said: “The journey behind Legacy & Lineage of Marcus Moziah Garveybegan with my meeting of Dr. Julius W. Garvey inside Liberty Hall, Kingston, Jamaica which led to my determination to uncover the genealogy of three extraordinary figures—Marcus Moziah Garvey, Amy ‘Ashwood’ Garvey and Amy ‘Jacques’ Garvey—and to follow the evidence wherever it led me.”

Speaking about her most significant discoveries while researching the book she revealed:

“One of the most significant moments came when I obtained Marcus Garvey’s death certificate and had the opportunity to take it to his son who had never seen it before in 2023, creating a deeply personal connection between the historical record and the Garvey family.”

Her research also took her to New York, where she obtained 104-year-old annulment records relating to Garvey and Amy Ashwood Garvey through the American legal system.

Carty said the documents provide an opportunity to move beyond established public accounts and examine their relationship through original legal records.

The book also explores Garvey’s connection with Britain, where his experiences and networks formed part of an international journey that would influence Black political thought across the Caribbean, North America, Africa, Britain and the wider diaspora.

Garvey, who died in London in 1940, became one of the most influential advocates of Black self-determination, economic empowerment and cultural pride of the 20th century. [. . .]
