By Horace Palacio: Manuel Heredia Jr., a well-known political figure in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye has officially announced his candidacy for the upcoming General Elections on March 12, 2025. Representing the United Democratic Party (UDP) under Tracy Panton’s faction, Heredia seeks to reclaim the Belize Rural South seat, which he previously held for four consecutive terms from 2003 to 2020.
Heredia, who served as Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation during his tenure, is returning to politics with a promise to address the needs of residents in San Pedro, Caye Caulker, and surrounding areas. His campaign focuses on improving tourism infrastructure, promoting economic growth, and enhancing community development.
However, Heredia’s return is marked by political tension within the UDP, as Dani Lagha, aligned with UDP Leader Shyne Barrow, is also vying for the same seat. This internal division means voters in Belize Rural South could see two UDP candidates on the ballot, creating an unusual and competitive race.
Despite the party’s internal challenges, Heredia remains confident in his chances, citing his longstanding relationship with the community and his track record of service. “I have always been dedicated to the people of Belize Rural South, and I’m ready to continue that commitment if given the opportunity,” he stated.
With just weeks left before election day, the race in Belize Rural South is heating up. Whether Heredia’s experience and reputation will secure his political comeback remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—the eyes of Belize will be watching closely.
