By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 29-year-old Belize City resident has been remanded to prison after a Senior Magistrate ordered a psychiatric evaluation due to his unusual behavior in court.
Santos Isiah Martinez appeared before the court on a single charge of damage to property but raised concerns about his mental state during the proceedings. The allegation is that on Saturday, March 21, 2026, on Pitter Street, Martinez, without lawful excuse, caused damage to a wooden door valued at $1,400, a tiled concrete verandah valued at $180, and other damages totaling $980.
While being asked to provide his personal details, Martinez began speaking incoherently, referencing “human rights cap.1, 2 and cap.3,” and insisting that he could not be charged if he could not be found guilty. He continued speaking out of turn, making statements that did not align with the court proceedings.
The prosecutor informed the court that Martinez has a prior pending matter in which another magistrate had already ordered a psychiatric evaluation. It was further explained that his family had indicated plans to pursue a private evaluation due to the absence of a government psychiatric doctor.
In light of his behavior, the sitting Senior Magistrate ordered a fresh psychiatric evaluation and remanded Martinez to the Belize Central Prison until April 10, 2026, to allow time for his relatives to be contacted and informed.
Martinez has had previous legal issues. In October 2023, he was charged after allegedly threatening to kill a woman who was a tenant in a property owned by his family. In that matter, he was granted bail of $800 plus one surety, which he was able to meet.
He is expected to return to court following the completion of the psychiatric assessment.
