By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Police are investigating a report of sexual harassment made by a 17 year old student at the Orange Walk market on Sunday morning.
According to the report, the student was standing outside her mother’s market stall around 9:34am having a conversation with another woman when a man she has known by an alias for five years approached and made explicit sexual remarks toward her, along with a threat to sexually assault her wherever he saw her.
She told police the remarks made her uncomfortable and she warned him she would call the police. When she took out her phone and acted as though she was calling, he picked up a wooden chair from another market stall and moved to throw it at her.
The woman with her intervened and began recording him. He put the chair down but continued shouting at her to stop recording, saying he was not afraid of the burial ground or jail, before leaving the area.
The student made the report at the Orange Walk Police Station accompanied by her mother. Statements were recorded from both and a copy of the video footage was obtained.
Checks were made at the market but the man could not be located. The matter remains under investigation.
