By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police are investigating a complaint of obtaining property by deception after a Belize City man reported paying more than BZ$13,000 for an imported SUV that was never delivered — only to later allegedly find the same vehicle being advertised for sale on Facebook Marketplace.

A 31-year-old man told police that in March he contacted a car dealer to purchase a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder through an online bidding site.

The complainant said they agreed on a price of BZ$13,000, with BZ$10,000 to be paid as a deposit and the remaining BZ$3,000 when the vehicle arrived in Belize.

According to the report, the man met the dealer at the Novelo’s Bus Terminal on March 20 and handed him BZ$10,000 cash. He said he later received an electronic receipt.

On June 24, the car dealer allegedly informed the complainant that the Pathfinder had reached Belize’s northern border and requested the outstanding balance plus a BZ$150 broker’s fee.

Smith told police that he subsequently transferred BZ$3,150 to an account provided.

The vehicle was reportedly supposed to be delivered on June 29, but the complainant alleged that the car dealer later told him he was unable to retrieve it from the border.

Nearly three months later, on September 17, Smith said he was scrolling through Facebook Marketplace when he saw a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder advertised by an account bearing the same dealer’s name.

Smith told police he recognized the SUV because the advertisement allegedly used the same photographs as the original online listing for the vehicle he had paid to purchase.

Police are investigating the complaint as obtaining property by deception. No criminal charge is indicated in the situation report.
