By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 27-year-old welder from Eleanor Usher Street is spending his first night at the Belize Central Prison after being unable to meet bail granted on a burglary charge.
Jose Ramos appeared before a magistrate in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, where he was arraigned on a single count of burglary.
Ramos is accused of entering the home of a 61-year-old mechanic of Locks Alley, as a trespasser on Sunday, April 5, 2026, and stealing a blue Samsung S21 cellphone valued at $360, a Digi SIM card worth $22, and a box of Corn Flakes.
At arraignment, the unrepresented Ramos pleaded not guilty and denied the allegation.
“I nuh broke into deh place and the man done get back his phone back and seh he will come drop the charge,” Ramos told the court.
However, the virtual complainant was not present in court to confirm any intention to withdraw the matter.
With no objection to bail, the court granted Ramos bail in the sum of $5,000 plus one surety of the same amount. Unable to satisfy those conditions, he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison pending bail.
The matter is next set for May 22, 2026.
According to police, the complaint was made at about 10:45 p.m. on Sunday when the mechanic visited the Criminal Investigation Branch Precinct #1 Police Station.
The mechanic reported that earlier that day, at around 12:00 noon, he had gone upstairs to his residence, a two-storey building where he occupies the upper flat, to have lunch and use the bathroom.
He told police that after opening the western-facing board door to allow breeze into the house, he went to the bathroom. While there, he said he heard footsteps coming from the living room area.
When he came out to investigate, the mechanic said he saw a light-complexioned male whom he immediately recognized as Jose Ramos, a former downstairs neighbour he has known for the past seven years.
According to Vaccaro, Ramos—who he said had recently been released from prison—ran out of the house carrying two plastic bags.
Vaccaro said he attempted to chase after him but was unable to catch him.
After checking the house, he discovered that his Samsung cellphone, Digi SIM card, and a box of Corn Flakes, which had all been left on a table, were missing.
Police say Vaccaro stated that at no time did he authorize or give Ramos permission to enter his home.
