Man remanded to jail for allegedly breaking into mom’s home and stealing speaker, chargers, bulbs, dictionary and cooking oil

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 29-year-old man from Biscayne Village is on remand at the Belize Central Prison after being accused of burglarizing his own mother’s home and stealing several household items.

Ashton A. Armstrong, a coconut maker and construction worker, appeared unrepresented before a Magistrate in Court #2 on Monday, where he was arraigned on a single charge of burglary. He pleaded not guilty.

Police allege that on Thursday, January 29, 2026, Armstrong entered as a trespasser into his mother’s home and stole $153 worth of household items. The items reportedly taken included a Bluetooth speaker, two $10 chargers, a two-foot white surge protector valued at $15, fluorescent bulbs, an American hardcover dictionary, and a bottle of vegetable oil.

During the hearing, the Police Prosecutor strongly objected to bail, citing the prevalence and seriousness of burglary offenses and stating that the evidence against Armstrong was overwhelming.

In his defense, Armstrong told the court that he resides at the same property and lives in the upper flat of a wooden structure on the premises, where his sister also stays. He explained that the house consists of two separate structures and said it was not feasible for him to simply leave the residence while the matter is before the court.

The Magistrate granted Armstrong bail in the sum of $2,000 plus one surety of the same amount, with strict conditions. He must not interfere with the virtual complainant, his mother; he must remain at least 20 feet away from her; and he must not interfere with any prosecution witnesses.

However, Armstrong was unable to meet the bail conditions by the end of the day and was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until April 2, 2026.

According to police reports, his mother reported that she left her home in Washing Tree Village secured when she went to work in Belize City that morning. At approximately 11:46 a.m., she received a call informing her that her son had broken into the house without her permission.

She contacted police and returned home, where she discovered the listed items missing. She then went to the upstairs portion of the property where Armstrong resides and reportedly found all the missing items there.

As a result of the discovery, Armstrong was detained and later charged with burglary at the Ladyville Police Station.
