By Aaron Humes: A Belize City man is hospitalized in stable condition after trying to fight a sudden fire at his residence on Friday evening.
Police and fire personnel were called to Hibiscus Lane, Belize City, Belize District around 7 p.m. and found a 2-bedroom bungalow cement structure measuring approximately 24 × 30 feet engulfed in flames which were put out by National Fire Service personnel.
Initial investigation revealed that about 7:00 p.m., 69-year-old Saul Cardona was in the living room with his son Saul Peter Cardona, 44, who left to plug in a fan in another room, and shortly after he smelled something burning. The son went to make checks in the bedroom and saw the fan in flames. He immediately went back to the living room and took his father outside to safety. Saul Peter Cardona then went back to try to extinguish the fire, but his efforts were futile and the fire went out of control.
Neither the house nor its contents were insured and the estimated damages to the building are uncertain at this time.
Police investigations are underway.
