By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 26-year-old Sandhill resident who drunkenly attempted to break into the storeroom of a senior citizen has been sentenced to three years in prison.
Julian Ramon Torres pleaded guilty to attempted burglary last week and was sentenced on Tuesday in Court #6 by Magistrate Mannan Dennison.
Torres faced a starting sentence of six years, but his early guilty plea and mitigation plea saw the time reduced by half, leaving him with three years to serve. Magistrate Dennison explained that while burglary normally carries a minimum of seven years, discretion was applied since Torres is a first-time offender.
The incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. on September 20, 2025, when a 76-year-old retiree was awakened by a noise at her home in Sandhill. She discovered Torres, whom she recognized as a neighbor’s relative, attempting to climb into her storeroom. In his drunken state, Torres fell from a chair, alerting the retiree, who confronted him.
No property was damaged or stolen, but the homeowner quickly reported the incident to police, leading to Torres’ arrest and charge.
Torres, who expressed remorse, will now serve out his three-year sentence at the Belize Central Prison.
