By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 27-year-old construction worker is facing a hefty court fine after pleading guilty to aggravated assault upon his cousin during an incident at a construction site.
Amir Arheni Aban, a mason of Belize City, appeared unrepresented before the Chief Magistrate in Court #1, where he answered to a single charge of aggravated assault. Aban wasted no time in pleading guilty.
The court heard that on Sunday, January 4, 2026, Aban, who was intoxicated at the time, assaulted his cousin using two screwdrivers as dangerous instruments. According to police reports, officers responded to a construction site on Seashore Drive, where Cobb reported that Aban—wearing a white T-shirt and appearing drunk—began threatening him in Spanish.
The cousin told police that he went to lie down to avoid the confrontation, but shortly after, he felt someone stabbing into his mattress. When he looked up, he saw Aban holding a blue screwdriver in one hand and a three-inch screwdriver in the other, swinging them at him. He said he punched Aban in self-defense, and a struggle followed before he fled to a nearby construction site to seek help.
Police later detained Aban and charged him with aggravated assault.
When questioned by the Chief Magistrate about his actions, Aban told the court he acted that way because he was intoxicated. He also stated that there had been no prior dispute between him and his cousin and noted that he was the one who had brought his cousin to work at the construction site.
Expressing remorse, Aban was spared jail time and instead received a non-custodial sentence. The court imposed a fine of $800 plus $5 in court costs, totaling $805. He was given until March 3, 2026, to pay the fine, or face three months’ imprisonment in default.
