By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A Belize City man was fined $700 after pleading guilty to common assault upon his sister, following an argument over $5.
Herman Oliver Solis Garnette, 27, of Barbara Harris Street, Belize City, appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, where he was read a single charge of common assault against his sister, a 29-year-old woman.
The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at the siblings’ mother’s house on Holy Emmanuel Street in Belize City.
According to police reports, the sister told police that she had gone to spend the day with her mother and was cleaning the house when her mother asked her to buy a gallon of water. She said that when her brother entered the house, she asked him for $5 that he allegedly owed her. An argument followed, during which she alleged that her brother punched her in the face, causing pain and swelling.
Police say the woman was issued medico-legal forms to seek medical attention, but she did not return them.
In court, Herman Garnette pleaded guilty to the charge, but said he did not agree with everything his sister had reported to police. He admitted that he punched her and apologized for his actions.
“I am guilty, sir, because honestly I don’t want to waste the court’s time,” Garnette told the Senior Magistrate.
He asked the court for mercy, explaining that his house had recently burned down and that he had been sleeping in his car. Garnette also told the court he has been going through hard times, working six days a week with only one day off.
Garnette further explained that he believed his sister would have been more understanding over the $5, since he said he had been tutoring her children for months. He also claimed that he apologized to her at the police station, but she refused to accept the apology.
For his guilty plea, Garnette was given a non-custodial sentence and fined $700, plus $5 cost of court. He has until October 30, 2026, to pay, in default of two months’ imprisonment.
