By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Saint Martin De Porres resident learned just how expensive 2 grams of well-packaged cocaine can be after pleading guilty to possession with intent to supply.
Jamal Samuels, 28, appeared unrepresented before Chief Magistrate Deborah Rogers at the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he was formally charged with possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply. Police said the 2 grams of cocaine were packaged in six small ziplock bags, which led to the intent-to-supply charge.
Samuels, who has no prior criminal record, pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity, earning him a reduction on the mandatory minimum fine. By law, trafficking cocaine carries a minimum fine of $10,000 or three years imprisonment. Chief Magistrate Rogers imposed the minimum fine of $10,000 but granted a one-third deduction of $3,030 for his early plea, leaving Samuels with a total fine of $6,670 to be paid by October 6, 2026. If unpaid, he faces three years in prison.
According to police reports, Samuels was intercepted on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at around 4:20 p.m. on M&Y Street while riding a bicycle. Police conducted a search and found Samuels holding a transparent bag containing six smaller ziplock bags of suspected cocaine. The total weight amounted to 2 grams. Samuels was arrested on the spot and taken to the police station for processing.
Chief Magistrate Rogers noted that Samuels’ fine is to run concurrently with any other sentence he may be serving and emphasized that his prompt guilty plea helped save the court time.
