By Breaking Belize News Staff: A West Collect Canal resident has added to his growing court debt after being convicted for possession of an article with a blade.

Forty-four-year-old Barrington Miller appeared unrepresented before a magistrate in Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he pleaded guilty to having a butcher knife in his possession after 8:00 p.m. The knife was reported to have a blade measuring 7½ inches in length.

The offense, which carries a maximum fine of $500 or up to six months’ imprisonment, resulted in Miller being fined $150 plus $5 court costs, payable by February 6, 2026. In default of payment, he will serve two months in prison.

Although this was Miller’s first conviction for possession of an article with a blade, the court noted that he is no stranger to the justice system, having appeared before the court four times this year alone. His criminal record includes previous convictions for escape from lawful custody, going equipped to steal, possession of a pipe, possession of utensils, and an active theft case.

Complicating matters further, Miller has outstanding court fines totaling $915. As a result, he was not immediately released and was ordered to pay $200 toward his existing fines before being granted an extension to settle the remaining balance.

Police reports state that in the early hours of Tuesday, December 30, 2025, officers on East Canal, Belize City, found Miller in possession of the butcher knife, whose cutting edge exceeded the legal three-inch limit.

Miller now remains in debt to the court as he works to clear both his new fine and long-standing financial obligations.
